Impulse Project -- Day 1


Probably against my better judgement, I started a new project. I had written up a design document and discussed the idea aloud with a few folks, but all fairly recently. 

While I probably should have waited off a bit before jumping in, I am fairly happy with how this early prototype is turning out. I'm actually using the generic UI I made for my UI Asset Project, which is kinda cool. 

For the first pass of the game, I've adding the following features:

1. car prototype

2. driving motions

3. point recognition

4. desktop and mobile input

This is the one of the fastest I've grinded out a mostly working prototype in a single sitting. I'm proud of myself! The vehicle moves, the point system is in place, the acceleration input works, and I'm recycling assets from previous projects that look fairly good in this setting.

I'm still not entirely sure what the best screen size for itch.io mobile viewers are. I initially tried to cut a 1920x1080 in half (960x540px) but that doesn't expand too well on mobile. It's fine on desktop, from what I can tell, but I'll need to adjust the size again so that it's mobile & HTML5 friendly. I'll likely try to have a HTML5 and a Android version, but for now I'll take what I can get and adjust each iteration as necessary.

Other things that I'll be adding in the near future after addressing the screen size and sprucing up non-player drivers:

tapping screen (not on buttons): honks

tapping gas: audio

tapping break: audio

lose splash screen

main menu & logo

additional vehicle options (aesthetic development, later down the line)

Hopefully I don't go too overboard. I think I just needed to get a quick prototype out of my system. I'm currently working on 2 other personal projects, a third project with my sister, and a fourth (but more chill) project with a few friends. But then again, the 2 personal projects are meant to be done at a slow and steady pace, as is the fourth project. The only one that requires a bit of active attention is the project with my sister, and I don't think starting this prototype is going to get in the way of that. Who knows for sure, though? Meh.
